Twisted Wheel

The site of the original Twisted Wheel club could soon be demolished to make way for a hotel.

This is the building, which was once home to the original Twisted Wheel Club, is situated on Whitworth street in Manchester.

It is now a club called Legends but still hosts two Twisted Wheel nights every month, which sees hundreds of northern soul enthusiasts travel from all over Europe to dance on the original dance floor and see the original stage.

Developers have purchased the plot and have agreed a leasing deal with a German hotel chain.

The chairman of the architectural firm, that have won the contract for the hotel, say they have only had one meeting so far with city planners and hope to have a planning application submitted by the end of the month.  They are hoping to go to committee by 31 May.

Fears that the club could now be turned into a hotel have prompted outrage from all corners of the music community in Manchester who believe the club is an important part of the city’s cultural history.

Everyone from Eric Clapton to Tina Turner, Elton John and Spencer Davies have performed on the very stage that still exists in the club and Jimi Hendrix also once visited The Twisted Wheel as a punter.

6 Music’s Elizabeth Alker went to one of the Twisted Wheel sessions to meet DJ and promoter Pete Roberts, who gave her a tour of the club:
